Ancient Egyptians were attracted by the beauty of the Eastern Coast . Many ancient Egyptian monuments and temples scattered here and there are true evidence of such on attraction.

There are monuments along the western coast, in Siwa Oasis, there is Amoun temple which was used for predication, ln the village of um El 0 Rakham, Ramses ll temple, it was built during the reign of the 26 th dynasty. Alexander the Great made his historic visit to Siwa Oasis
 

to present his loyalty to god Amoun, in order to gain the acceptance of the Egyptians for his reign in Egypt . Alexander the Great stopped at the place of Marsa Matrouh and ordered a city to be built on the spot, during his reign the construction of the city was being started. The city was named paratoneum under the reign of the ptolemies, then the name changed unto (Amounea ) named after god Amoun then the name changed to be Marsa Matrouh.

 

Matrouh. Is the western gate of Egypt , a transit for travelers from East to West and the connective point between the Arabian Maghreb countries and Asia continent.

The north – western coast was used as a farm during the Greek and Roman eras Where the cistern and Roman moats were used for irrigation.

 

Marsa Matrouh is the place which witnessed a part of the love story between Antonio and Cleopatra.

Cleopatra ordered a palace to be built there, its remains are successful discovered near Cleopatra bath Marsa Matrouh.

 

After the lslamic conquest to Africa, the lslamic armies came from Maghreb Arab countries to Spain and the south of Europe to spread Islam , they had passed by that road .

In the World War ll, many battles were carried out on the sand of Matrouh, the most famouse was El – Alamein battle which decided the fate of war.
